It follows the story of Walter Hartright, an art teacher who has an encounter with the titular woman — a mysterious, distressed character — while he is in London, and is told later she has escaped from an asylum. However matters become even more complicated after he heads to Cumberland to work for land-owner Frederick Fairlie — and discovers that his niece Laura, who lives with him and her devoted half-sister Marian Halcombe, bears a stark resemblance to the woman he met in London. The pair fall in love — despite Laura being betrothed to another man, Sir Percival Glyde — and they marry, but Anne soon becomes involved in their lives after it transpires she knows a secret about her new husband that will ruin his life. From there, things take an even darker turn with switched identities, unexpected deaths and a plot which becomes even more complex. Ben Hardy Walter Hartright will of course be familiar to EastEnders viewers as he played Peter Beale on the soap for more than two years — although more recently you might have seen him in X-Men: Apocalypse and Mary Shelley. Collins — who was also a contemporary of Charles Dickens — is considered to have published his best work in the s, although his later career was hampered by ill-health.SEE VIDEO BY TOPIC: Learn English Through Story And Subtitles: The Woman in White (Level 6)

The event troubles him all the more when he's introduced to Laura, and notices she's nearly an exact double of the strange woman he saw. When Hartright tells his strange tale to Laura and Marian, they're immediately fascinated, and begin trying to solve the mystery of the woman in white, little knowing it will lead them into a maze of danger and wrongdoing.

Unfortunately, the movie adaptation from is a mixed bag. The film captures the dress and language reasonably well though, and there are a couple of excellent performances - Sydney Greenstreet as the mastermind Count Fosco, and John Abbott as Frederick Fairlie, lord of the estate, who is demented, highly eccentric, and fragile. Some of his lines early on to his beleaguered servant Louis are quite funny. There are two main problems as I see it, and the first is with the story itself, which asks the viewer to swallow a somewhat convoluted plot with some pretty big coincidences.
What worked in installment form, or even in the published novel in , is hard to translate successfully to film. The second issue is in cinematography, and overall tone. Antonius B Super Reviewer.
Sep 27, Good lead performances and high production values but the story feels truncated and that many of the aspects of the source material are missing.

Fiona Handyside. From the precocious charms of Shirley Temple to the box-office behemoth Frozen and its two young female leads, Anna and Elsa, the girl has long been a figure of fascination for cinema. The symbol of imagined childhood innocence, the site of intrigue and nostalgia for adults, a metaphor for the precarious nature of subjectivity itself, the girl is caught between infancy and adulthood, between objectification and power. She speaks to many strands of interest for film studies: feminist questions of cinematic representation of female subjects; historical accounts of shifting images of girls and childhood in the cinema; and philosophical engagements with the possibilities for the subject in film. Containing work by established and emerging scholars, this volume explodes the narrow post-feminist canon and expands existing geographical, ethnic and historical accounts of cinematic cultures and girlhood.

It also takes place in Hampstead Heath where Walter Hartright first encounters the woman in white, a Victorian asylum, and the slums of London. Limmeridge House's exterior was created using an 18th century house named Florence Court, owned by the National Trust in Fermanagh, while the interior was filmed at Dundarave House. The "sinister and dreary" Blackwater Park, the home of Sir Percival was shot at Narrow Water Castle near Warrenpoint, meanwhile, the mental asylum scenes were shot at Belfast's boys school Campbell College.
Walter Hartright receives a letter from Frederick Fairlie requesting that he restore his art collection and tutor his nieces at Limmeridge House in Cumberland. Before he leaves for Cumberland, he meets a woman dressed in white, who tells him she used to live at Limmeridge. Shortly afterwards the woman rushes away and boards a coach. Some time later Walter overhears a conversation between a policeman and a coach passenger suggesting that the woman is deranged and has escaped from an asylum.
Florence Court in Fermanagh, Castle Ward on the shores on Strangford Lough and Murlough National Nature Reserve all feature prominently in the production which was filmed here last year. The countryside outside Belfast is beautiful, unmarred by development or electricity poles, and its landscapes range from parklands and ancient forests to wide open beaches - everything that we needed to give the story the sweep and epic quality of the original novel. This diverse portfolio, spanning natural landscapes and built heritage means our places often feature in major TV dramas and films, with Game of Thrones, Dracula Untold and Frankenstein Chronicles filming here in the past. Viewed by many as the first psychological thriller novel, The Woman In White will take viewers on a chilling ride down the shadowy paths and corridors of English country houses and ultimately into the depths of the Victorian madhouse.

Each time the mystery deepens, we are introduced to a new setting that taints the atmosphere. The Victorian thriller is set across a few key locations — village-like Hampstead, a remote Cumbrian house, a Gothic mansion in Hertfordshire and the East End of London.
