I'm kinda new to the romance genre, but what little I had read had often been predictable, formulaic, and a touch cheesy: two perfect star-crossed people meet under impossible circumstances and secretly crave each other madly, but can't for whatever reason.
The man's imperfections are even perfectly contrived, with a healed-over broken nose that's just so, and his thoughts and dialogue fantastically feminine. I was SO pleasantly surprised by the cheeky, often hysterical banter and quips inside of The Duchess Deal. I hadn't expected the novel to crack me up -- which it did, early and often! There were several lines from this book that actually jarred my heart!
I'm officially obsessed. I would give this book 10 stars if I could! Emma and Ash are my new favorite book couple - the chemistry between them sizzled from their first meeting until the very last page. George Pembrooke, the Duke of Ashbury aka Ash as well as, bunnykins, my fawn, sunshine and honeybee along with several other pet names - LOL is in need of a heir and for that he will need a wife.
Almost as soon as he writes the words to his solicitor - a woman in a hideous wedding gown appears in his library. He doesn't go out in society since he was wounded in the war, so having a bride appear in his home is perfect. Emma Gladstone is a seamstress and when Ash's former betrothed calls off the wedding - Emma is stuck with the gown and no money to show for her hard work. Desperate, she visits the Duke in hopes of payment. But to her surprise he offers her marriage. Of course she says no and leaves.
But later she rethinks her refusal. Emma has scars of her own, but unlike Ash hers are not visible to the world. So when Ash shows up at her shop and tells her he really wants to marry her - she agrees. They marry and Emma begins to break down the walls Ash has spent the last two years building. Love was never part of his plan - but as hard as he tries to keep her out, Emma storms the walls and steals his heart.
I laughed out loud, I cried and I had to fan myself reading this book - it was perfect. It is well written, flows perfectly, has a great supporting cast, witty banter, hilarious internal and external dialogue, steamy love scenes, a little heartache, a protective hero and a loving heroine.
This is a totally silly book -- the story is filled with so many historical inaccuracies and crazy mistakes that it is almost impossible to ignore. The staff talk to the duke and duchess like modern day democratic equals, the duke goes shirtless at a ball??? NO as the oldest son in he would NOT have been fighting at Waterloo, and these are just a few of the totally unbelievable aspects; there are more!
In fact for a while I was confused by the language and wondered if in fact it was a more modern era. I've only listed some of the more egregious things but seriously this is a totally ridiculous story and it wasn't even that interesting. There was lots of sex not something I have a problem with but it all felt like filler rather than a way to move the plot forward.
If you are looking for a real Regency historical romance I'd go with Meredith Duran or others and give this book a miss!
See all reviews from the United States. Top international reviews. I'm a huge fan of Tessa Dare. I've read most of her books and was really excited to get my hands on this. One of her earlier novels, When a Scot Ties the Knot, is one of my all-time favourites and this story is written in a similar style, with non-stop funny banter between the characters.
Having said that, after reading several historical novels back-to-back I did have trouble getting into it at first. The way the protagonists talk to each other is very 21st century and not remotely the way a 19th century duke and seamstress would speak to anyone of their era, let each other - they would probably never even meet.
When the Duke of Ashbury returns from the war horribly scarred "Faulty rocket at Waterloo. You have precisely three seconds to move past it. This saves me so much effort. She thinks she might even grow to love the Duke, and is hoping for a real marriage, but the Duke has a few rules There are two things about this novel that make it outstanding: the cracking dialogue and the brilliant characters - particularly the hero, Ash.
I was about halfway through the story when the penny dropped. Ash is basically Deadpool - manically cracking irreverent jokes to hide his pain, both mental and physical. Ash had once been an extremely handsome man, now he considers himself to be a monster who frightens small children. It's not the only superhero reference. Ash's relationship with his butler is very Bruce Wayne and Alfred 'Batman' , the encounter with Trevor the teenage boy who wants to be the sidekick of the 'Monster of Mayfair' reminded me of 'The Incredibles', and then there's that very steamy kiss in the pouring rain But it you love witty, warm-hearted romantic comedy, with characters that leap off the page demanding your attention, you'll love it.
This was definitely a five-star read for me. Thank you for your feedback. Sorry, we failed to record your vote. Please try again. Emma works as a streamstress and walks Ash is the Duke and feels he looks like a Monster due to an injury he suffered whilst at war! To ensure his estate is safe when something happens to him he needs an heir, and with never leaving his house, he sees this down and out streamstress as the way forward! When Ash propositions Emma, she takes her money and storms out the house, back to the life in the shop.
Of course, she would be silly to not accept his offer, so signs the papers and married the Duke. Emma refuses to allow Ash to be mean and hurtful to her, and gives as good as she gets. There are so many detailed reviews that I will just say - read it and enjoy it. I discard many books in this genre because they are historically inaccurate, too modern in manner and mannerisms, in language, or a rehash of plots that have been done to death.
I read a Tessa Dare book some time ago and although I quite enjoyed it, I didn't like the aspects mentioned above, so I haven't read anything else by her. However, this book had such rave reviews that I bought it - and it was a funny, genuinely witty, warm and uplifting read.
The content has some of the elements I don't like, as above, and the plot is certainly not a new one - the physically and mentally scarred war veteran being saved by the love of a good woman has been done again and again.
That aside, I laughed out loud, rooted for the couple, loved their banter, especially the heroine's teasing of her stiff, starchy husband and the relationship with their staff, and just simply enjoyed this light, funny and uplifting book, and just set aside my usual reservations.

Beauty and the Beast is my favorite fairy tale so of course I was super excited to read this authors version of it and once again Tessa Dare did not disappoint. I really enjoyed this funny and charming marriage of convenience! Vicar daughter Emma Gladstone learned the hard way to depend solely on herself. What she gets instead is a marriage offer.

I keep them in a little book and pore over it from time to time, whilst sipping brandy and indulging in throaty, ominous laughter. Surely you know the feeling of infatuation. Everyone does. About me. I have an unfortunate habit of looking for the best in people, and it makes me blind to their flaws. These things always do.
