Old Man lyrics - Neil Young
People tend to draw lines between each other and place themselves into categories. You are either young or old, educated or uneducated, thoughtful or shallow, middle class or working class, popular or a loser, or whatever other labels society uses to define us.
Sometimes, the youths of society may not always follow the rules but perhaps that is because they have something to say about them. Likewise, being a member of the older generation does not necessarily mean being rigid and close-minded — they were once young as well.
All people, no matter who we are, are subject to emotion. A twenty four year old who is still getting a grasp of the world and is wandering in search of love and understanding is not so different from an elderly man or woman who has lost a spouse and has plunged into a new world of life without his or her soulmate and is trying to find a new purpose in life.
You could lose something you love as twenty four year old and still be mourning that loss fifty years later. Once you have found something dear to you, you are not going to gamble with it. A tossed coin has to do with chance and risk, but by keeping it safe in your pocket nothing will change.
It will simply roll on home with you, on to old age and beyond. Regardless of who we are, we all have basic needs, desires, and fears. As humans, we all seek the same things, albeit in different forms. The elderly, conservative man from Kansas wants love, comfort, security, and justice just as much as the new-age, liberal hippie from Portland, Oregon. They may disagree on the methods of finding what they want but at the very core, their goals are all the same.
Our identities are composed of our past experiences, from the lullabies that were sung to us as infants to whatever occurred in the past five minutes. All of the places that we have been to, the people we have met, the things we have seen, felt, or experienced, these are the things that make us who we are.
Ironically, there is both a young and old Neil. It is often believed that revolution and change is brought about by the simple struggle of the young generation against the old. That in order for the human race to evolve the young must forsake their close-minded forebears in favor of new ideals, new rules, new technology, new ambitions, new society… But it is not that simple. To illustrate, technological innovation does not occur simply by throwing away all old technology and forgetting all old knowledge and somehow magically bringing some completely new invention into existence.
Innovation is built upon previous knowledge, previous successes, and even previous failures. Even the ideas that seem the most unorthodox, the inventions and philosophies and crazy feats that have never been done before and are bound to change the world as we know it, must be inspired by something somewhere that is already in existence.
It is for this reason that we need diversity and tolerance of it. Anyone can learn from anyone else, young from old or old from young. If we can recognize that on the inside we all want to be loved and understood, we can look beyond discrimination based on our outer identities and actually use our differences to our advantage. By venturing out of our own normal social groups and talking to someone different from ourselves or the people we have met, we can find inspiration for ideas that we may have never considered before.
The world would certainly be a better place if people could see that underneath all the labels that society places on each other, and that we are not all that different in the end. Great post! Although I do believe people still pay way more attention to labels and stereotypes than they should be, I do believe that people are becoming more and more open-minded as time passes.
Perceptions have already changed so much within just the past half century and I have hope that in the future things will continue to change for the better. Like Liked by 1 person. I love Neil Young. I completely agree with you that age should not define us. We often forget as younger people, that the older generations were younger once and have experienced things in their lives that we could stand to learn a thing or two from. Age is just a number in my view.
My god, I know for sure that as I get older I will still want to experience new things and people. Life is for living until the day you die! Great post xx. I completely agree! No one should be set on any idea about anyone until they have actually taken the time to understand their thoughts and feelings. Anyone, no matter what age, race, religion, or whatever, can do or be anything they want.

Old Man – Neil Young
Old man look at my life, I'm a lot like you were Old man look at my life, I'm a lot like you were. Old man look at my life Twenty four and there's so much more Live alone in a paradise That makes me think of two. Love lost, such a cost, Give me things that don't get lost. Like a coin that won't get tossed Rollin' home to you. Old man take a look at my life I'm a lot like you I need someone to love me the whole day through Oh, one look in my eyes and you can tell that's true.
Old man, look at my life I'm a lot like you were Old man, look at my life I'm a lot like you were. Old man, look at my life 24 and there's so much more Live alone in paradise That makes me think of two. Long lost, such a cost Give me things that don't get lost Like a coin that won't get tossed Rolling home to you. Old man, look at my life I'm a lot like you I need someone to love me The whole day through Ah, one look in my eyes And you can tell that's true.

The song compares a young man's life to an old man's and shows that the young man has, to some extent, the same needs as the old one. James Taylor played six-string banjo tuned like a guitar and sang on the song, and Linda Ronstadt also contributed vocals. In the film Heart of Gold , Young introduces the song as follows:. About that time when I wrote " Heart of Gold " , and I was touring, I had also—just, you know, being a rich hippie for the first time—I had purchased a ranch, and I still live there today.
